Artist and Writer, Doctor Alexander Kanevsky for Royal Shakespeare Globe Theatre in London

Legacy untold

On 15th day of March, 2003, Sir Peter Kyle, the General Director of Royal Shakespeare Globe Theatre of London came to Kanevsky Art Gallery in New Haven, Connecticut, wherein acquired Alexander Kanevsky’s  “Hamlet”, “King Lear” for the Theatre per prior agreement between the director and the artist who will paint them in dedication to beloved Shakespeare and his “Globe”

Peter Kyle recognized “Hamlet”, that was hanging on the wall of the Gallery along with other paintings, right away and, beholding to it, cried of overwhelming emotions. For himself, to his personal collection, however, he acquired Kanevsky’s “Alexander on the grave of Achilles”.

Kyle telephoned Kanevsky already from London several days later to say that people at the Theatre have already viewed the paintings. “How did they like it?”,- asked the artist.” Most were amazed, some not so much. They think it is too wild and unconventional, they fear it. Unlike the customs at “Heathrow” who looked at “Hamlet” and then at me, back again at “Hamlet” and at me back again. Then concentrated on Gertrude’s breasts. Then looked at me, smirked and cheered: “We better let you in”, Kyle related. “Andyou’re your “Hamlet” stands upon the theatre ‘s stage”, the director resumed.

Few years thereafter Peter telephoned Kanevsky forthwith confession and a pledge: “Alexander, I so much love your “Hamlet” that I ought to look at it constantly. May I hang it in my office ‘stead of the Theatre Hall?”. “What of people seeing it?” the author of the painting wondered. “Not to worry, Alexander, all the dignitaries from every part of the world go through my office.”   So may you, reader, visiting the “Globe”.
